Every new year, the Pantone Color Institute announces a Color of the Year. You may be wondering “what the heck is that?”
First off, Pantone means “all colours,” combining pan and tone. Before their institute came along, every printing company had their own colour guide. For example, one company might call sunshine-yellow “yellow,” but another might call lemon-yellow “yellow.” This led to a lot of confusion and inconsistencies.
In 1963, the institute developed the first colour matching system to create a universal guide. And ever since, fashion and interior designers have waited eagerly to see what colour the new year will bring.
To choose the winner, experts from the institute travel the world to see what’s hot in design, art, movies, fashion—and even sporting-events and socio-economic conditions.
This year’s colour is Classic Blue. The nice thing about this one is that you probably already own a piece or pieces of classic blue clothing. It’s such a warm, timely colour.
