How to Have Ageless Style: Fashion for Mature Women

How to Have Ageless Style: Fashion for Mature Women

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression “dressing your age.” And while many of us can relate to not wearing a teeny tiny miniskirt or jumping on the latest trends, why shouldn’t mature women have some fun with fashion?

While the fashion industry slowly becomes more inclusive by expanding clothing sizes and adding more People of Colour to the runways, they’re also starting to recognize that style doesn’t stop at 40!

And we do have some pretty chic 40+ Canadian style icons to look up to:

  • Jeanne Beker: A journalist, media personality and style entrepreneur best known for hosting the long-running Fashion Television show.
  • Tamu McPherson: Founder of the online community All the Pretty Birds, created for “a multiethnic and multicultural audience.”
  • Linda Evangelista: One of the top supermodels from the 1990s; you may remember her famous sound bite that she wouldn’t “wake up for less than $10,000 a day.”
  • Suzanne Boyd: the editor-in-chief of Zoomer magazine, Canada’s leading magazine aimed at the baby boomer generation.

So this month, we’re sharing 4 ways to have ageless style:

1. Build a foundation of basics.

This is key for any age group really! And finding clothes to flatter your body type, personality and lifestyle can be a challenge, especially with all of the overwhelming (and often fast-fashion) options out there.

A capsule wardrobe can be a great way to create a solid foundation of basics throughout the year. It’s a small but useful collection of seasonal clothing that is generally made up of 30-40 favourites.

We shared some tips on creating a capsule wardrobe in a previous blog if you want to learn more.

2. Go for a perfect fit.

One of the biggest confidence killers among women of all ages is ill-fitting pants, dresses or bras. Luckily, our custom-fitted TAB bras at Malary’s have no underwires and 125 sizes to fit EVERYbody!

Now, while we may have put up with high heels that pinched our toes or a dress that was a bit tight around the midsection, I’m sure a lot of us nowadays would say “I’m too old for that!”

Fashion for mature women is all about style and comfort. The first trick is finding the right pieces, and the second is getting things tailored just for you if needed. A good tailor can make all the difference between an outfit that’s “meh” and one that’s amazing.

We have one of the very best tailors onsite to make sure your new purchase fits perfectly and here is the bonus: we do it for FREE on all full-priced items!

3. Let your personality shine through.

At the end of the day, what you wear comes down to what makes you look and feel secure, comfy and happy.

Don’t let other people dictate what or what you don’t wear. I always find it so enlightening and empowering to see my customers choosing the clothing at Malary’s that complements their own unique style!

4. Find someone who understands ageless style.

At Malary’s, we pride ourselves on providing our clients of all ages with “head to toe” servicing. Visit us Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am to 5pm and we’ll help you coordinate the most flattering outfits for your body type, personality and budget.

Whether you’re in your 30s or your 70s, wear what makes you feel best, rather than worrying about “dressing your age.”

There are really no hard and fast rules when it comes to fashion for mature women, so find what works for you and own it! Being comfortable and confident in your own skin is the real key to ageless style.
