how to really truly spring clean your closet

How to Really, Truly Spring Clean Your Closet

For whatever reason, we tend to hang onto things even when they’ve outgrown their usefulness. Maybe it’s sentimentality, or being busy with other life. Or perhaps it’s a hope that the item will come back into fashion, or fit again.

And I often come across advice on paring down your closet, and while some of it is very useful, it’s generally quite similar. The author talks about getting rid of things you haven’t worn or used in six months, for example.

However, what I find lacking in many of these articles is how to keep your closet organized. That’s why we see the same articles again and again every spring! The next year, many women are overwhelmed with the exact issue from the year before.

That’s why this month, I’m offering 5 ways to spring clean your closet and keep it clean.

  1. GET ORGANIZED.

Have you ever watched those TV shows where an organization expert comes in and completely overhauls someone’s closet? The before picture is a cluttered mess, and the after photo is a breathtakingly organized closet with everything in its place.

If you invest some time and energy into folding clothes in dresser drawers and bringing in storage options that work with your space, you’re much less likely to toss things haphazardly on the floor or shelves.

  2. SWAP OUT SEASONAL ITEMS.

If you’re thumbing through summer dresses as you look for a warm fleece for winter, it’s time to separate your seasonal items.

By storing items in clear bins and boxes when they’re not in season, you open up so much more space in your closet. Bonus points if you organize your seasonal wardrobe by colour!

  3. CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE.

Neutral colours, like this white top from Bella Amore Italy, are a staple of capsule wardrobes.

If you haven’t heard the term “wardrobe capsule” before, it’s a more minimalist approach to fashion. You have a set number of versatile pieces that you rotate and build upon to create different looks. While it’s up to you how many articles of clothing you have in your capsule wardrobe, between 25 and 50 pieces is the norm. By focusing on key pieces in neutral colours, you can accessorize and mix and match a plethora of different outfits.

  4. MAKE IT FUN.

Spring cleaning your closet doesn’t have to be a chore that you put off. Put on some music, light a candle, enjoy your favourite beverage…

The more you treat this like a fun activity, the easier and more effective your spring cleaning will be!

  5. THINK BEFORE YOU BUY.

Choose quality over quantity, like the natural fabrics from Dolcezza.

Especially in today’s world of fast-fashion choices, it can be so tempting to snap up every $5 t-shirt and $20 pair of shoes you see.

However, not only does this have huge implications for the environment and employee working conditions, it’s also a rapid way to accumulate too much stuff.

By spending a bit more on quality, sustainable fashion, you’ll prevent closet-overload. You’ll also save money in the long run, because the clothing you buy will last.
